Heritage United Way Partners with Southern New Hampshire Services and the Internal Revenue Service to Offer Free Tax Preparation
Monday, January 26, 2009
By connecting eligible workers to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), communities across the country have discovered a way to strengthen working families while bringing more federal dollars into the local economy.
The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax benefit for low- to moderate-income working families, as well as a small benefit for some workers without children. Workers, who qualify for the EITC and file a federal income tax return, can receive a refund even if no taxes were taken out of their pay during the year.
The EITC provides a financial boost to these families by reducing their tax burden and, in many cases, allowing for a tax refund when they file their annual income tax return. In 2007, New Hampshire residents claimed approximately $109.5 million dollars through the EITC.
Heritage United Way, Southern New Hampshire Services and the Internal Revenue Service are currently working together to assist families in receiving their rightful Earned Income Tax dollars by operating a local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in Manchester from February 1 to April 15, 2009. Here, individuals can receive free tax preparation services and learn how to claim their EITC.
For more information on the location and hours of operation for this site, or for the location of a site in other communities, please call 2-1-1 NH by dialing 2-1-1.
